It's 1992 all over again

Ron Cloer (June 24, 2008)- Back when you were watching Wayne's World on the big screen, "She's magically babelicious", a major event was rocking the comic book world.  One of the major events that shaped the early 90’s was the creation of Image comics.  7 rogue artists, creators and visionaries decided to break away from the big 2, Marvel and DC and form their own company, Image Comics.  Their creation was eagerly received by most fans because these were the hot new artists: Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee, Erik Larsen, Whilce Portacio, Rob Liefeld, Jim Valentino and Todd McFarlane.

Years later they reunited, those 7 men gathered together at Atomic Comics in Arizona for the 1st ever signing of all 7 founders.  Can you believe that this was all for free comic book day?  According to reports there was a lively excitement in the room about this historic gathering.  Now the Image fans at Wizard World Chicago will get a similar chance to ask some questions of all 7 minus Jim Lee.

If you want to attend you need to form a plan now.  Unless you have an early pass in to the convention (9 am) you’ll have to go immediately to get a ticket for this free event.  Tickets are given out on a first come, first served basis at 10 am on Saturday.  The event which happens from 2 to 4 pm should include some great insight from the original creators of Image.  Hopefully you can get your questions answered.  Let me throw out a few ideas -

Why were you guys always so late on release dates?
Why didn’t you recruit great writers too?
Are you guys getting the band back together again?
Is it true that you all hung out in Wayne and Garth’s basement? (we’re not worthy, we’re not worthy)

According to an Image press release this October, SPAWN returns to its roots as series creator Todd McFarlane and fellow Image Founder While Portacio take the reins in issue #185.

"While I'm very happy with where Spawn has gone, it's long past time to inject some new blood into the series while also returning to its roots," said McFarlane. "I feel what Whilce and I are doing with our co-writer, Brian Holguin, combines the old and the new in a way no one would have expected. That's a claim which gets tossed around quite a bit in the industry, but this one really changes everything."

Details on the new direction will roll out over the coming weeks, especially during the team's appearance at Wizard World Chicago, June 28. The convention will feature both signings and a panel delving into the plans for what's to come.

SPAWN #185, a 32-page comic book for $2.95, will be available in stores October 2008. For more on their Wizard World Chicago appearance, please see www.wizarduniverse.com. Further information about the SPAWN comic, and all things McFarlane, can be found at www.spawn.com
